When should you begin mowing your lawn?

Every spring, before the grass, turns green and starts to grow, mow the lawn. The lawn receives its signal to begin growing when the old, dead tips are cut off. The sooner your lawn begins to grow, the more effectively you can crowd out weeds before they emerge.

How frequently should I mow?

The norm is to mow your lawn once a week, but some lawns require more frequent maintenance. Some lawns, which grow more slowly, might only require cutting every ten or two weeks. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Any more could endanger the grass. Instead of considering when the lawn was last mowed, think how long it is.

Mowing Advice

Blades should always be sharp. Instead of cutting the grass blades, dull mower blades often rip them. Every broken blade provides a path for disease and stresses the lawn. Avoid mowing a lawn when it’s wet if at all possible to avoid the same issue. If you attempt to mow a wet lawn, you’ll create ruts and the grass will start to lean over, making it challenging to get a good cut.

Feel free to leave the clippings after mowing as long as your lawn is healthy and there are no thatch issues. Mulching is beneficial, but it is not required. Your lawn won’t be harmed if the clippings aren’t too much. In a short amount of time, the clippings will decompose and supply nitrogen to your lawn.

Let it Develop

Your lawn’s root system will extend the longer you allow it to grow (in terms of length, not necessarily time). Your lawn will be healthier and more resilient to stress if its root system is longer. Less watering is required for lawns that are more resilient to drought and stress. Additionally, studies have shown that by limiting the amount of sunlight that weed seeds receive, the number of weeds in the lawn can be decreased by allowing the grass to grow to a length of 212 to 3 inches. Longer blades also provide more surface area for photosynthesis, which gives the grass more energy and food to sustain life. Make the season’s final cut the shortest one possible. The likelihood of matting, which contributes to winter kill damage, is decreased by cutting the lawn short for the winter.

5 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Fall

family having fun during fall

It’s the best time of year for fall fanatics! Preparing for fall is such a drastic change from spring and summer that many see it as a breath of fresh air after the hot summer months. With many favorites that everyone can identify, it’s fun to see fall home projects start popping up in your neighborhood. Preparing for fall is actually fairly easy, and there are a ton of ways to make sure you’re all ready by the time cool weather is here to stay and fall is well underway!

Clear Out the Gutters

As the weather starts to get cooler, it’s common for leaves to start falling, pointing to the start of the fall season. If the leaves don’t get removed, they can clog gutters and lead to serious roof damage. If you find yourself struggling to keep up with water coming into the house, it’s likely that panels are damaged. Take a look, and you might notice the gutters are too full of fall leaves.

Drain Lawn Care Equipment of Fluids

Don’t put away your mower or weed whacker without draining it of the fuel needed to keep it running. Any leftover fuel can damage the equipment and give you problems come spring when it’s time to get things back out again.

Prepare for Winter, Even if it Seems Early

It’s not necessarily going to snow in October but getting ready now means you’re prepared for anything that winter might throw your way. Plus, you’re likely making room by storing things from summer, so take some initiative and stock up on salt, as well as fuel for the snowblower.

Fertilize for Fall

Grass goes through something fierce during the fall and winter. Taking time to fertilize now will make a difference when things thaw out after winter and spring show a lawn that’s weathered the weather. Taking time to fertilize now gives your grass the strength it needs to handle snow, freezing temps, and even the random heat rushes we get late in September and into October sometimes.

Check Your HVAC Now Before Issues Pop Up Later

As you transition from air conditioning to heating sooner than later, make sure to get your HVAC serviced. This could be as simple as something being replaced or renewed, and really not cause much of a headache. It helps to be proactive here because when temps start dropping hard, you don’t want to be left without heat.

Tips To Keep Your Lawn Fresh

freshly mowed lawn

Every homeowner dreams of a lush green lawn, but keeping your lawn in tip-top shape 365 days out of the year can be a big job. Here are a few tips on how to keep your lawn looking fresh all year long.

Fertilizer: Fertilizing your lawn a few times a year can go a long way. It’s good to fertilize once in the spring, then again in midsummer with a food blend higher in nitrogen than other elements. Fertilizing too much can mean too much growth, by reducing the amount of fertilizer you can save time and energy.  It is best to fertilize after mowing and when the grass is dry to help it stick to the blades

Take Care of your Lawn Mower: Mowing your lawn regularly is important to keep it looking full and lush all year long. In order to do so, you need to keep your lawn mower in good condition. Make sure to drain gasoline and oil from your lawnmower when you are done using it. Any gasoline that stays in the tank for over a year can gum up your carburetor.

Watering: It is best to water your lawn in the early hours of the morning. This gives the lawn an opportunity to dry before nightfall when many types of fungus are most active. This is also usually a non-peak time for water supply. It is better to water well a couple of times a week than lightly daily. Deep soaking encourages deep roots growth while light watering encourages roots to stay close to the surface of the soil making your lawn susceptible to heat and drought.

Repair Brown Spots: Many times your pets can cause unwanted brown spots on your lawns. There is a high nitrogen content in pet urine which causes it to burn the grass. It is best to water these areas well within 8 hours to help dilute the high nitrogen levels. If these spots go untreated then you will need to repair them to help get your green grass back.

Tree Removal in Bellingham MA

Just the other day, we had a phone call from a man, who lived in Bellingham MA, and he was interested in our tree services. He said that he had a really old tree in his back yard, which had dead branches hanging over his neighbor’s garage and cars. He said he spoke with his neighbor, who said he was nervous about the tree falling on his garage, or harming one of his children.

We arrived on site, and could see that the next big storm would most likely cause the branches to fall into his neighbor’s property; which could potentially cost him a lot of money in repairs. We decided that it would be the safest choice to just knock down the whole tree; that way he won’t have to keep paying a company to trim up the branches.

The way the tree was angled, we had to ask our customer if we could use his neighbor’s driveway to park our truck. He ended up asking his neighbor, and his neighbor said no problem.

With the neighbor’s permission, we parked our car in the driveway, and we were able to get started on taking down this massive oak. In the end we were successfully able to remove the tree from the backyard.

Both the neighbor and our customer were both very pleased with the swift work we just completed. They both felt safer, and our customer said that he can finally relax now that he doesn’t have to worry about paying for his neighbor’s damaged property!

We provide tree services, which include complete removal, stump removal, and branch trimming to residents of Bellingham MA. We also provide landscape services, from maintenance, lawn care, lawn installation, and more to residents and businesses. If you are interested in any of our landscape services, please give us a call at 774-248-4584.

Millis MA

Since 2009, here at Lola’s Landscape, we have been providing our expert landscaping services to residents and business owners of Millis MA. We provide a variety of services from spring cleanups, to landscape design, and lawn installation.

Just a few days ago, we had a call from a customer, who was interested in our lawn repair services. She said that her lawn had a brownish color, and she could tell that it wasn’t very healthy. We told her that we would send out a team to inspect her lawn, to see if they could figure out what was wrong with her lawn. One of our landscapers traveled to her house, and he could see that her yard was being overrun by insects and various grass diseases. Right away he suggested three services that would eliminate these diseases, and insects: dethatching, watering and fertilizing.

Once your grass is healthy enough, it will be able to fight off these invasions; when your lawn is not healthy, it is not strong enough to fight these infections, and it can become very costly to fix. So when you first notice your lawn’s poor condition, call us right away so that we can bring its health up high enough to fight off these insects!

We will watered her lawn, we told her that she needs to do this at least twice a week, go rid of all the thatch (leaves and debris) from the soil, and fertilized her lawn. After a few checkups here and there, her lawn will be in tip top shape; strong enough to fight off insects and other diseases that can harm your lawn!

We provide our services all over Norfolk County; if you are interested in a free estimate, please give us a call at 774-248-4584; we are looking forward to helping improve the health of your grass this summer!

Spring Cleanup in Medway MA

Just a few days ago, we received a call from a family in Medway MA, seeking our spring clean up services. They said that they found us online, and wanted to know if it was too late for a spring clean up; we told them no, and asked them if they were interested in a free estimate.

They explained how big their yard was, what it looked like, and how much damage had been done by the winter. After we discussed the size and condition of the lawn, I gave them an estimate, and they were very interested in our services. They ended up making an appointment for the next morning.

My team and I arrived to their home, and could see right away that their yard was covered with leaves, broken branches, and other debris left over from winter and spring; we began working right away.

The debris was covering up the soil of the yard, which was preventing the grass from growing strong and healthy. We pulled and cut all the debris from the soil; sun and rain can finally reach the soil, which will help it grow strong enough to fight off weeds.

They were so impressed with our workmanship, that they asked us if we provided mulching services. We said we did, and that the best time to mulch is in June-August, when the weather is hot. The mulch will keep the soil moist and cool during the hot summer months. They said that they would like to schedule our mulching services for June 13, we said yes, of course!

Here at Lola’s Landscape, we provide our expert services year round. We are looking forward to helping you maintain you lawn. If you have any questions about our landscaping services, please give Adam Lola a call today at 774-248-4584.
